Exploring The Snowy Mountains.

The Snowy Mountains region is one of Australia’s most unique landscapes. The high-altitude atmosphere creates a scenic playground with plenty of hidden gems. Your day in the high country could be filled with steep adventures that get the heart-rate up and pure escapism, solitude, and serenity to bring it back down.

Twin Valleys, located in Jindabyne, is an ideal base camp for exploring the mountains. With prime views of the mountains and lake you’ll be inspired to get out and make the most of what is on your doorstep. These are some of our local recommendations so you get the most out of your stay,

Mountain Biking

  • Thredbo is home to some of the best alpine riding in the country. There are lift-accessed gravity trails, skills parks for all ages, a linked network of cross-country trails, two fast-flowing pump tracks, and a team of certified instructors to take your riding to the next level. • Lake Crackenback is your gateway to some of the best riding in Australia. Bring your own bike and enjoy world-class road and mountain bike routes from our doorstep. Hire bikes from the resort and try out the 19km track from Thredbo or venture further afield with guided tours. Whatever you choose, there’s no better way to explore the stunning natural playground of the Snowy Mountains, than on two wheels. Click here for more.

Hiking

Swimming

  • The Thredbo River has an abundance of sublime swimming spots in Summer. Check out the Merritts Snowmaking Pond and The Rockpools in Thredbo and The Diggings and Bullocks Flat in Crackenback. The Thredbo River Picnic Area is also beautiful for swimming.

  • The Snowy River may be Australia’s most ‘refreshing’ river. It’s a bit of a walk the best swimming spots are accessed from Guthega along the Illawong Track. Island Bend provides closer and easier access to The Snowy, located on the way to Guthega.

  • From Twin Valleys this is your go-to! It has miles of foreshore and water access. It’s also a hub for fishing, kayaking, supping, wakeboarding, waterskiing, and any other on-water activity you can think of.

Summer Adventures

Ski Resorts

  • Thredbo is fewer queues and plenty of great trails and events. Thredbo is about a 40-minute scenic drive up the Alpine Way in Winter. You will need a National Parks Pass for your car and we recommend purchasing your lift tickets in advance. Click here for more information.

  • Perisher is also a great resort with loads of trails to explore. Perisher car park has been known to fill up on the weekends. So we recommend leaving early or look into the Ski Tube. Click here for more information.

  • Charlotte’s Pass is a great alternative to save some dollars and try something a little different. While the resort is smaller it will still keep you skiing for a day and enjoying the big views. Passes include on-snow transport from the Perisher Ski Tube. Click here for more.

Backcountry Adventures

  • Thredbo has some stellar backcountry access if you are looking to experience something outside of the resort. This is the most direct access to Mt. Kosciuszko if you want to summit in winter! We always recommend a guide for the backcountry. Click here for our go-to.

  • Deadhorse Gap is a snowgum-filled wonderland. It makes for a perfect half-day outing or winter picnic spot (if the weather is good). We always recommend a guide for the backcountry. Click here for our go-to.

  • Guthega has some great backcountry access and is a beautiful in winter. While the Illawong Hike is a little tedious you also get the reward of crossing the Snowy River on a suspension bridge. This is the best way to experience the wonders of Blue Lake, Mt Twynam, and The Western Faces. Again we recommend a guide! Click here for our go-to.
